Do It Yourself Divorce – Step One – When Things Are Mellow
This Do It Yourself Divorce is going to be a multi-part series explaining how to do your own divorce in California, specific to Contra Costa County. All counties are very similar in this process, but may vary a little. I’m going to explain each part as I go through it. This series will take about 10 to 12 months since I’m just starting. The thing to remember is that you and your future ex must be on extremely good terms with no chance of getting screwed half way through. I think I’m in that situation but time will tell.
- Go to your local court house. You will be looking for the Court Clerk’s Office. Look for the window that says Family Law.
- Let them know you are filing for divorce and you need Dissolution Forms. There are two sets. The Initial Dissolution Form and The Final Dissolution Forms. Get both; they cost about $10.00 per packet.
- The Initail Dissolution forms are just that. The initial forms you fill out for the court and submit.
- The Final Dissolution are the forms that are filled out after mediation has been completed. These are the forms the judge sees and signs to finalize the divorce
- Ask them if they have workshops on how to fill out the forms correctly. All counties do and the workshops are free.
Step Two will cover the actual Workshop, Filing of the Forms and how to serve your ex.
